India's First Commemorative Coin

In India,commemorative coin was not issued from 1835-1947 AD.India won it's independence from the British rule on 15th August 1947.India retained it's monetary system,the currency and coinage of earlier period during 1947 to 1950.Until 1950 Independent India did not minted its first coin.India brought out its first coins on 15th August 1950.

The first set of commemorative coins was issued issued on 14 November 1964, on the occasion of 75th birth anniversary of Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru who was the first Prime Minister of independent India.
A first set of two coins in the denomination of 1 rupee and 50 paise were struck at Bombay and Calcutta mint for general circulation.Afterwards all four Indian mints, namely Mumbai, Kolkata, Hyderabad and Noida, have produced commemorative coins.
Since then commemorative coins in all the denominations have been issued except 1, 2, and 3 paisa coins.
